So I've owned a set of Logitech z4 2.1 desk speakers for about
five years now, ever since a good friend of mine effectively gave
them to me because they couldn't fit in his car. They remain one of

There's isn't much to add to the above GIF, other than that I
think it's a really cleverly designed and demonstrated concept. The
idea of CMYK printing is nothing new to me; I've been interested in

So another year, another April 1st. As is usually the case, the
internet was awash with odd concepts, fake news and terrible puns.
On top of which, we also had the annual Aprils Fools "pranks" …
Yes, I am one of those irritating people that have decided to
resurrect an audio format that, by all rights, should be long
extinct. And, further yes, I'm also now going to complain about my

I get a fair amount of spam posted to theAdhocracy. For the most
part, it's easy to spot and formulaic (though admittedly
increasingly intelligent). Spam comments either thank me for
helping solve a …
Today I corrected somebody on the internet. Of course, the
correction was entirely warranted because it touched on any area of
very specific specialist knowledge of which I inexplicably know
enough …
I've had my current Sony Xperia for nearly three years, which is
a good run, but it's definitely starting to show its age. First of
all the headphone jack broke; it still works, it just doesn't know

I'm a pretty big fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so it
felt a bit ridiculous when I was given Guardians of the Galaxy:
Volume 2 for Christmas. To be clear, the gift wasn't
ridiculous; …
Having just got back from Sidmouth Folk Festival, I wanted to jot down some of my thoughts about the eleven artists we managed to see whilst the music was still firmly playing in my ears. From the traditional to the modern "nu-folk", we certainly had a great spread of styles, instruments and traditions. Some might even say it was folk'ing awesome!
A full write up of our trip to Devon and the Chilterns a few weeks ago, from folk festivals to Whipsnade Zoo to tree cathedrals. We had a great, highly varied time, exploring some places we know very well from a new angle and some entirely new parts of the country.
An amalgamation of all the data you get fed at the end of a year. From Spotify Wrapped, to Google tracking, to my own beer journal, a look back over 2019 from a (mildly) data-centred viewpoint.
When we got back from Christmas we had the normal stack of
letters sitting on the doormat. Most were either later Christmas
cards (yay!) or pointless real-world spam (boo!), but one piece of

For my 29th birthday, my parents bought us a meal at a South
African restaurant on the North Bank called High Timber. For
several months we had tried, and failed, to secure a booking only
to discover …
What a great day. My work runs a quarterly rewards scheme known
as The Club and I was lucky enough to qualify this time around, so
that meant a half day and then off to a fancy restaurant for an

Notes from my second fully remote conference, this time Sparkbox's UnConference. Being able to freely access talks from the US is a rare bonus of everything going on right now, and this did not disappoint. Musical cameos, great talks on UX, accessibility, design systems, and amazing speakers. Great event (despite the time difference).

The same, but different: breaking down accessibility, universality, and inclusion in design
A great review of the differences and similarities between
universal design, inclusive design, and plain old accessibility,
from one of the originators of universal design within the web
community …

Adding Search: Refining The Frontend (Algolia, Gatsby, Craft CMS - Part 3)
The search page is live, the index is populated, but it all looked a bit rubbish and it didn't quite work as well as I wanted. Now it's using custom-styled components, queries are tracked/stored via the URL for persistence, and you can filter results based on category.
A series of articles addressing the argument that there are
simply too many damned dinosaurs in some assemblages.
Darren has put together 8 separate pieces dissecting each of

There's been a lot of chatter about Spinosaurus
recently, thanks to the new revelations about its tail morphology,
but I think Mark has put together the best overall argument for
what the …
There are several strong arguments for moving away from using "master branch" as default terminology, but what should it be replace with? Personally, I like the idea of extending the tree abstraction that we use when talking about branches, so have started using "trunk".
The idea of a great divide in front-end development resonated with me. I'm worried about how the erosion of certain skills could lead to a less inclusive, accessible web, for both users and developers. On the other hand, there are some massive advantages to our new tools. It's a double-edged sword.
A wonderful article about the early web, and how it evolved from
a medium where one person could truly own an entire site into the
behemoth that takes teams of people to wrangle that we know today.

Using a combination of Speedlify and Google Lighthouse tool,
Zach is able to display web performance scores in his footer,
bespoke for each page. He seems to be doing so client-side, though

It's a long weekend, but we hadn't planned anything special. An
early invite up to Scotland with my parents felt a little too
risky, but a follow-up suggestion to head over to South London to
catch …
