Aardman rarely does any wrong (even if some things aren't quite right, either) and Robin Robin doesn't break that streak. It's a lovely (and often quite funny) tale of a robin brought up by mice; a combination of a found family tale and black sheep morals centred around being who you truly are and playing to your strengths. Throw in a distinctly camp bachelor magpie and it ticks a lot of progressive fable boxes. I'd prefer it if the enemy hadn't been a cat, though there's certainly plenty to say about the ethics of outdoor cats which is relevant to the story, and the animators certainly manage to make the creature a true threat. Indeed, like any good kids story, there's more than a little genuine horror on display, even if "good" ultimately triumphs in the end. What more could you want from a Christmas tale 😊
