I definitely made a bit of a mistake assuming this would be the first of the Firefly graphic novels, rather than somewhere midway through the run, but oh well 😂
As it is, I can't really complain that the story is a bit confusing. I've effectively picked up a book, read the blurb, turned to a random page, and expected it to "just work". But still, it was weirdly jarring revisiting a group of characters that I know so well, only for there to be some new people (unexplained), a kid (easy to piece together), and a change in leadership. The weird setup and references to missed events aside, this is definitely a set-up book, laying the groundwork and doing little else. The focus ‒ as the title suggests ‒ is on Jane, which seems like a fine-enough decision. However, whilst I liked that his brother (I assume?) rocks up at the end, a son? Hmm... we'll see.
And then there's the art. All context aside, it's pretty solid. There are a few instances where facial expressions and angles are a bit off, and as people keep changing clothes (and often look similar) its sometimes tricky to track who is who, but it's pretty darn good. The only real issue is that the characters don't look much like the TV series. Some are more recognisable than others, and I get maybe changing them up a little, but everyone seems significantly de-aged and just blander, particularly Zoë. Oh, and then the covers all show people with difference haircuts, bears, clothes etc. which doesn't help with the confusion 🤷♀️
Overall, then, this felt like something I'd be happy to dip back into, but far from a must read.
